The City of Orilla is about an hour and half from Toronto. It has been ranked one of the top 60 places in Canada to live and the greenest city in Ontario.  To commemorate its anniversay, the City of Orilla, originally named Mariposa in 1912, is  having a festival called Sunshine City Festival on August 17-19, 2012. There will be vintage carnival, antique autos, period music, costumes, food, vaudevilles shows, concerts, horse and buggy rides and comedy.

Prior to its anniversary, there are other festivities like the  Rotary Lions annual funfest last Aug. 3-6, 2012 on Lake Couchiching Beach Park.  My family and I visited the place last August 5-6 (Civic Holiday), and watched people going on  carnival rides.  We were also delighted to hear the  band concert played by an orchestra with its rendition of the national anthem “Oh Canada” followed by “Canada Overture” and other movie themes.

The beach is clean and enticing for visitors to swim. My youngest daughter and I went for a short walk at the beach as she saw ducks running around the shore. The weather was not good as it rained hard and the lifeguard advised people to stop swimming  so we had to go to the Econo Lodge where we were billeted.  The hotel is nice with spacious and comfortable rooms, maid service is efficient, friendly customer service and affordable rates.

What seems impressive to me is the fishing pier at the Port of Orilla where various amazing yatchts lined on the boardwalk. You can also view the entire Lake Couchiching when you go on  a cruise via the big ship called Island Princess. There is also an upcoming Waterfont Festival on Aug. 10-12, 2012 showing water ski shows, boat sale, cottage and outdoor marketplace, vendors, music, beer garden and the Cardboard Boat Race.

You will also find the Casino Rama where big time excitement begins like commercial casino, concerts and events in its 5000 seat entertainment centre. There are various hotels and cottages around the city, art galleries museums, golf country club, shopping center, farmers’ market and the Guardian Angel Church for worship. Please see the city’s calendar of events for  festivals  until Oct. 2012 (http://www.orillia.ca).
